Mark S. Anderson, MD, PhD Director, UCSF Diabetes Center Robert Friend and Michelle M. Friend Endowed Chair in Diabetes Research Biography Mark Anderson, MD, PhD, is a leading expert on autoimmune disease mechanisms. His research focuses on how the transcription factor Aire promotes immune tolerance. His lab has developed translational strategies that manipulate Aire-mediated pathways to treat immune-related diseases. Dr. Anderson is co-founder of UCSF ImmunoX and currently serves as President of the Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies (FOCIS). A practicing diabetologist, he advises several national consortia, including TrialNet, focused on preventing and reversing type 1 diabetes. He has also chaired NIH’s Hypersensitivity, Autoimmune and Immune-mediated Disease (HAI) study section and directs UCSF’s MD/PhD training program. In 2020, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
