The annual conference is put on by cloud computing company Salesforce to showcase some of the nation’s thought leaders, industry pioneers and innovators. UCSF participates each year to highlight the latest innovations in health care and research.
This year, UCSF scientists participated in talks and panels on topics that included AIDS, using big data to stop viral outbreaks, fighting the Zika virus and battling cancer.
Using Technology to Stop Viral Outbreaks like Zika
Atul Butte, MD, PhD, director of the UCSF Institute for Computational Health Sciences, spoke with Pardis Sabeti, MD, DPhil, a computational biologist at Harvard University, about how big data can be used to help prevent viral outbreaks.
Using Yourself to Beat Cancer and How We Will Beat Zika
Jeffrey Bluestone, PhD, a professor at UCSF and CEO of the new Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, talked about the new techniques that are being used to fight cancer, including immunotherapy. Arnold Kriegstein, MD, PhD, the director of UCSF’s Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research, and Susan Fisher, PhD, professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, then spoke about the work that UCSF is doing to battle the Zika virus.
Leadership and Boldness in the Time of AIDS
Eric Goosby, MD, joined a panel of speakers that included Rep. Nancy Pelosi in the Forbes Philanthropy Summit: Leadership and Boldness in the Time of AIDS. Other speakers on the panel included Deborah L. Birx, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator for the U.S. Department of State; Mark Dybul, executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; Ernest Hopkins, director of legislative affairs for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation; and James Loduca, senior vice president of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

Edward Machtinger, MD, the director of the Women's HIV Program at UCSF, joined the Forbes Philanthropy Summit: The Legacy Of Ending AIDS For Good.
